If you ask those who know me, they’d tell you Nazan is a dreamer. And I am. I love to dream. I suppose that is one of the main reasons why I love spending time with myself.
Solitude doesn’t scare me. On the contrary, I genuinely enjoy stepping away from the crowd, spending time on my own, dining alone at a restaurant, or taking long walks by myself. In short, I love any activity where I am left alone with my thoughts.
To an outsider, I might look lonely in those moments, but I’m really not. For starters, my best friend—myself—is right there with me. And together, we put our heads together and dream to our heart’s content in any setting 🙂
There was a paragraph in İpek Darga’s book Yedi Gün Adası (Island of Seven Days) that resonated deeply with me:
“Dreamers are those who see the world not as it is, but as they wish it to be. But never forget; it is always those dreamers who change the world. They do not dream to escape reality, but to create a new one.”
Isn’t that wonderful?
I’ve always managed to adapt to my current reality; but I most likely owe that to my ability to dream.
On the other hand, dreaming isn’t as easy as it might look from the outside; it requires focus, the skill of vivid mental visualization, time, and, of course, dedication. You can’t just brush it off saying, “well, I dreamed once and it didn’t happen right away”; there’s no such thing.
I suppose the greatest common trait among dreamers is their ability to embrace solitude. Because it’s only in moments of solitude that we truly grant ourselves that space. Over time, I’ve even developed the ability to stay solitary while in the middle of a crowd. My body is right there, I can even join in the conversation; but my spirit is crossing oceans. Those who know me well notice it immediately and ask, “Nazan, are you here?” 🙂 Sometimes I say “Yes,” and sometimes “No.”
So, here is the real question: Have I managed to design the life I wanted through dreaming? I suppose the answer is both yes and no.
Years ago, I dreamed of having a small café, baking my own bread, leaving the stressful life behind, and waking up early in the morning just to greet the day with the scent of fresh bread. So yes, a very special dream of mine did come true for a time.
However, as I grow older and gain more experience, my ideas about an ideal life evolve in equal measure.
Now, I have new dreams. As I build and visualize them in my mind, my heartbeat changes, and a subtle smile appears on my face. The sheer joy and pleasure of dreaming in that exact moment is truly beyond words—it has to be experienced 🙂
For me, dreaming is not an escape from my current reality; it is my way of constructing the next phase of my life. Time flows on, I change, and my dreams shed their skin right along with me. While feeling grateful for yesterday’s dream in the scent of fresh bread, I can close my eyes and set sail toward entirely new horizons.
Dreaming is wonderful; I highly recommend it.
With love,
Nazan
