Another summer is biting the dust, and I am in full-on mourning. Because I am a total summer person, and I’m crying rivers over it ending. The days spent living in a t-shirt, shorts, or a sexy backless dress are officially behind us. And honestly, it breaks my heart.
Nature is basically facing death right now; all the flowers are dying, and green leaves are turning yellow and dropping like flies. A gloomy, dark sky, sharp winds, cold rain whipping our faces, and snowflakes are waiting right outside the door, just itching to crash the party.
Yet summer is the only season where everything is truly alive. Mother Nature is vibrant, kids are running wild in the streets, and everyone—young and old—is flirtatious and cheerful. The dress code? Breezy and colorful. The fact that it gets dark late and wakes up early is just the cherry on top. Magnificent sunrises and sunset. Hanging out in the summerhouse garden with my mom and sister, enjoying harmless gossip, laughter, cocktails—with the cat keeping us company,… Ah, my absolute, most favorite things!
Despite the sweltering, sticky heat, I’ve never complained about summer, and I never will. Sure, I might have thrown out an “Ugh, it’s so hot!” here and there, but that’s definitely not a complaint—it’s just a statement of fact.
When I take a quick look back at the summer of 2026, I can totally say I’m at peace with it. I wouldn’t have minded a bit more beach time, but hey, let’s save that for the summer of 2027.
Nature is gearing up to die these days. I know that death is a must if you want a rebirth. So, I’m fully aware that in this hemisphere we live in, we’ve got to slog through a brutal winter just to get back to summer.
Still, my loyalty to summer is unbreakable. In fact, I’m seriously thinking about designing my life around “chasing summer” from now on. What does that even mean? It means living in places where it’s summer all year round. Meaning: when it’s winter over here, I’ll just pack up and head to a summer country to hang out for the season, and when the tables turn, I’ll come back home or stay nearby. Just picture it: no coats, no boots, no gloves, no scarves. Pure bliss!
This might sound a bit unhinged to you—being this obsessed with a season, I mean. But I refuse to “mature” about this or just accept the seasons as they come. Some of you are probably thinking, “Well, you can’t truly appreciate summer without experiencing winter.” Oh, trust me, you so can! After all, I’ve done the winter thing. Fifty-two winters, to be exact. So from now on, I’m good with sticking to pure summer and milking every single second of it.
I just don’t like winter, my friend. For starters, I’ve got frigophobia (that’s an intense, totally irrational fear of the cold or freezing temperatures). If I have to crawl out of a warm cozy spot and head outside, I start shivering before I even touch the doorknob. And traveling to Europe in the winter? Packing that suitcase is hands down the most stressful job on earth. Thermal underwear, wool socks, gloves, scarves, coats, heavy boots… As you can see, my relationship with winter is a total disaster.
Take summer, for instance—it actually has a smell. It’s hard to put into words, but let’s try: summer mornings smell crisp and fresh, like fresh mint, newly cut grass, or jasmine. When the midday heat hits, you get a whiff of hot asphalt, a bit of soot, and dust. But as the sun starts to go down, the night-blooming cestrum kicks in, mingling with the neighbor’s barbecue smoke. Anisette wafting through the air… or freshly sliced watermelon, fried eggplant. When a soft breeze catches it, there’s a hint of sea salt. Oof, what a sensory overload! They each smell amazing on their own, but when they all mix together, they straight-up blow your mind.
Well, at least they blow my mind. Not everyone can stomach a neighbor’s grill smoke, sure, but in my book, it’s a non-negotiable part of summer. If your neighbor isn’t firing up a barbecue in their yard, you’ve got boring neighbors, period. And oh, that gorgeous anise scent spreading out the second you pour water into rakı…
But is winter anything like that? What does winter even smell like? Don’t you dare say roasted chestnuts, because I hate that smell 🙂 There is literally zero exciting about winter to me. And the fact that it drags on way longer than summer is just adding insult to injury.
Anyway, I suppose my absolute obsession with summer is pretty clear by now. As for the part about “Why should any of this matter to you?”: Well, I don’t care, I wrote it anyway—those who want to read it will, and those who don’t can just scroll on.
Goodbye, summer of 2026! You treated me like gold, thank you. Here’s to many more long and scorching summers…
With love,
Nazan
Note: You thought it was something completely different when you read the title, didn’t you? 🙂
